Fragments of the Capri Style

Elegance, sobriety, eccentricity: these are words which characterised Capri in the 1950s and 60s, years during which the island became popular with intellectuals, wealthy bankers, industrialists, flâneurs and creatives from all corners of the globe. Each of these personalities brought to Capri their personal style and tastes, colouring the island with their foulards, cropped trousers and leather Romanesque sandals. None encapsulated the Capri style as graciously as the opera diva Maria Callas, seen here strolling via V. Emanuele in 1959.
